DR NIGEL PARKER

Principal

Nigel, a Principal of the Firm, is a Registered Patent & Trade Mark Attorney in both Australia and New Zealand. He holds a B.Sc.(Hons) degree majoring in Biochemistry and Microbiology. Prior to commencing on a Ph.D. program, Nigel undertook research at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and then worked at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute as a Research Assistant investigating effects of anthracycline drugs on gene transcription.

The research for his Ph.D. Thesis entitled: “Molecular Studies on the Gene Encoding Ribonucleotide Reductase R1 Subunit” was conducted in the Department of Medical Oncology of the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Nigel then undertook Post-Doctoral research at the University of Melbourne, firstly in the Department of Paediatrics to study and characterise the novel STIM gene family, which he discovered during the course of his Ph.D. studies, and then in the Department of Medicine to study IGF-binding proteins and the relationship of protein structure to binding specificity.

Nigel entered the Patent Attorney Profession in 2001 and undertook a Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law, which he completed in 2002.

Nigel’s practice specializes in the drafting, prosecution and litigation of Biochemical and Biotechnological patents, both before IP Australia and the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand and in the Federal Courts of Australia. His work focuses on the fields of Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Immunology, diagnostics, medical devices and plant innovations and Plant Breeder Rights. Having rebuilt his own motor vehicle, Nigel also enjoys working on mechanical inventions and building materials and has a keen interest in the patenting of business methods.

Nigel also practises in the fields of Trade Marks and Designs before both IP Australia and the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand.

Nigel is a Fellow of The Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia, a Member of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association, where he serves on its Emerging Rights Committee, The Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand and a Member of the Australian Biotechnology Association.
